(Greatness doesn’t lie in passion, but in persistence).

“Greatness doesn’t lie in passion, but in persistence”
– from an English teacher in my middle school.

The English teacher was an avid reader who makes his own Analects. That one was his number one saying that I couldn’t forget for the last 10 years. As time goes by, I realized how true it is. Everyone is so passionate enough to change the world at the moment, at the day, or at the week. But the passion withers away soon. The true great thing happens when you build momentum through daily action even though it takes just a half hour a day. It is really hard, but really works.

Life Is Like the Ocean

ocean

Life is like the ocean. You never know when it will turn into a storm even when it is so calm and peaceful like a lake.

Life is so beautiful in this moment of my life.
What I only can do is to taste every single bite of the moment and give my thanks to God.

2. As I remember, I read a poet or an essay that goes “life is like the ocean” in the army. I wanted to quote it. I couldn’t find it, though. So I wrote it by myself.

What Made You Decide to Marry Him or Her?

There are some questions I really like to ask my married friends, and the number one question is always “what made you decide to marry him or her?”

My favorite answer that I’ve ever heard so far was from my friend Bennett. He said, “because she is so beautiful!” Yes, he is a dude. JK.

Anyway, he turned a little bit more serious and said, “she just makes me want to be a better man!!”

How true!! The reason why I like to ask the question is because I have to be prepared for the moment when I have to decide whom to marry, and I am quite sure that it would be a very helpful advice for me to do that!

Therefore, guys, let’s find the girl! go for it!!.. Just do well yourself Ikseong..

Check out this video clip. I didn’t know there is a movie scene like this. Did he quote this movie? No idea. haha;;

Life is about LOVE

My number one hobby is to think about life; how to live and how to die. It’s been almost 6 years since I became serious on this topic; I can confidently say I have never stopped thinking about it, not even a single day, because of that, ‘Thoughts on Life’ is the heaviest folder in my blog and Evernote. Even though the conclusion slightly changes every day, I’ve constantly got a vague but quite solid idea, that is the balance between family, work, love, and health as they all matter. So you’ve really gotta give each of them your best shot all the time unless you want to live with regrets. The balance, yes, it sounds like a cliche. But it took 26 years for me to truly understand the meaning.

I just wanted to live a life that changes the world and take a place in the history no matter how much it costs. As I’m growing older, however, it seems to me it’s more about the love. LOVE what you do so that you can accomplish something and, hopefully, leave a legacy on the history along the way. Above of all, LOVE your family, people around you and the time you spend with them because the happiness from them gives you the true energy and willpower to endure all of your daily struggles. The last one is something resonates with me the most these days. One more! MAKE SURE TO LOVE YOURSELF FIRST.

Meeting with my Mentor and His Career Advices

I had a one-on-one talk with my mentor who is a Vice-President of one of Samsung’s subsidiaries. Even though he is a man of success, when you talk to him he has a way of making you feel quite comfortable with his humor, wit and insights. I would say he is not only a man of success but also a man of value.

There are three things I took  from the talk, and I think they will have profound impact on my life.

#1. You don’t have to regret or get depressed when changing your career.

For the last 3 years, I have made my focus on the PV industry, even though I am just a senior with business major, meaning I have a lot of potential career paths. He knew it and asked, “let’s say you got a job in the industry, but unfortunately you found the industry didn’t fit you. What would you do?” Come to think of it, I was  amazed that he asked me to answer the question by myself rather than giving his advice directly. It made me fully convinced. I said, “I wouldn’t regret, because I could make my focus and did my best thanks to my dream. I’ve got a lot of and variety of outcomes along the way. They will help me get through another career if I have to.”

To be honest, I was afraid. Having only two semesters left before graduation, I sometimes come to think that “the industry might doesn’t fit me well.” But I even couldn’t consider other career paths beside the industry, fearing to abandon all things I’ve leaned and got in the industry although all they are just sunken costs. His advice helped me think that I have to look for more opportunities. Even if the same industry comes as a conclusion afterward, It worth trying. “‘DON’T SETTLE, KEEP LOOKING'”.

2. Let’s do what I love and what I am good at, not just looking cool.

All the careers I’ve considered so far was something cool in my perspective. Some of them were not what I can excel others and I love. It could mean I will be unhappy with the job. He explained all the bad results of too much stress from an unhappy job. Doing what I love to do and being happy with the job is probably one of the keys to success. Also, it is a ‘sustainable’ career.

3. Let’s be a role model as a Christian.

All though  he is protestant and I am catholic, we all are Christian. He is a great role model as a Christian for me. Talking with him, I was able to feel how a good man he is through his bright smile like a kid, his happy and healthy face, and his warm words. I was a lot worried if being Christian means having disadvantages in the business world because it requires a lot of ‘not-to-do’ list; especially in a society like Korea where work comes first and you have to do whatever your boss want you to do, it is hard to refuse many things against your ethical standards. He also had to get through all the struggles and conflicts, and he finally made it. He even pointed his faith as his key to success.

I hope I can be a man someday, who has overcome the most challenging obstacles and has been able to take good care of his family, faith, and personal happiness so that a young man like me today can have a hope that he can make it too, he can have a wonderful life as long as he does his best.

It’s always a pleasure to recommend a book I love!

Last year, being in Utah, I was so impressed by Mormon friends that I couldn’t help but eager to learn their attitude toward life. That made me read <The Mormon Way of Doing Business>. It became one of my favorite books that have changed my life.

At that time I often visited a blogger who studies at Stanford and writes about Silicon Valley and his journey on life, and I found him very impressed by his Mormon professor, boss, and friends! So I recommended this book! and he wrote this great article(http://sanbaek.com/2012/11/18/mormons/) after his reading!

Come to think of it, I feel kind of funny because I’ve recommended this book themost although I am a Catholic. You know what, the book that I give as a gift most often is <MAY ALL BEINGS BE HAPPY>, which is from a Buddhist monk! I can learn from every where! right? Anyway, I am going to attend the blogger’s lecture today! Yay!

[“The Shallows”를 읽으며]
